If you’ve ever walked around the city and wondered why some trees, bikes, and lamp posts were wrapped in yarn? Well now there is no longer need to wonder because the person doing all the yarning has finally spoken out. Valerie Sherman has been doing what she calls “yarn bombs” since November of 2019. Since then, she has been dropping acrylic yarn bombs on a weekly basis.
Over the past year she has redirected her work to the South and West sides. As a way to beautify the neighborhood without gentrifying it, Sherman has weaver her yarn around The Forum in Bronzeville , where she raised about 3,000 dollars, down in Southside Blooms, where on earth day she made yarn bombs that had QR codes that would educate the public on different earth day causes.
Art isn't the only resource she provides though, Sherman makes sure to donate all the money she earns directly to the community organization she works with, even if the pieces only last from about 6 to 12 months.
