1st woman with Down Syndrome to compete in Miss USA Pageant System

A 22-year-old became the first woman with Down syndrome to compete for the crown this weekend in the Miss Minnesota USA pageant. Bethel University student Mikayla Holmgren earned the Director's Award, the Spirit of Miss USA Award and a standing ovation when she competed in the statewide contest at the Ames Center in Burnsville on Sunday. "She never really has a bad day," says her dad. In 2015, Holmgren was crowned Minnesota Junior Miss Amazing. Last month, she wrote on Facebook, "I hope to continue dancing. I want to teach art to young children. And would love to model. I want to live independently and continue to be an advocate for inclusion. I want to be a shining light for acceptance."
