Next summer the Art Institute will be gaining a piece of Chicago history as well as American history. In June of 2021, the official portraits of President Barack Obama and the first lady Michelle Obama will start their residency at the Art Institute as part of the beginning of a five-city tour of the country.
The museum plans to hang the portraits in the first gallery past the Grand Staircase near “A Sunday on La Grand Jatte” the painting by French artist Georges Seurat. Since creation the portraits have been in the Smithsonian and this will mark the first time that the portraits have ever gone anywhere else. So get ready to have one more extra piece of history hanging out in Chicago.
