101-Year-Old Holocaust, Spanish Flu Survivor Beats COVID-19

A 101-year-old man who goes by “Mr. P” has lived a truly remarkable life.

The World War II survivor was admitted to a hospital in northeast Italy after testing positive for the novel disease last week. Now, he’s made a full recovery. According to Forbes, Mr. P of Rimini, Italy, has since been released from isolation after battling COVID-19 (coronavirus).

This isn’t the first instance Mr. P, born in 1919, has faced a pandemic. Forbes reveals the man also outlasted the Spanish flu that infected an estimated 500 million people.

In a statement to Jewish Journal, Vice-Mayor of Rimini Gloria Lisi said Mr. P’s extraordinary recovery is “the story everyone talked about” in the hospital, adding, “Everyone saw hope for the future of all of us in the recovery of a person more than 100 years old.”

“Every day we see the sad stories from these weeks that mechanically tell about a virus that rages and is especially aggressive on the elderly,” she continued. “But he survived. Mr. P. survived.”

It’s stories like Mr. P’s that citizens in Italy need to hear now more than ever, considering the country has the highest coronavirus-related deaths in the world at 10,779. Additionally, Italy is the second-most COVID-19 infected nation with at least 97,689 confirmed cases, falling just behind the United States with 142,793 cases.
