Princess Diana's Unexpected Connection to Michael Jordan
Princess Diana: Accredited Access Exhibition is not the first mark the late Princess made on the city of Chicago. In 1996, Princess Diana visited the windy city to help raise funds for Northwestern University’s Robert H. Lurie Cancer Center. During her three-day stay, The Princess of Wales was able to help raise $1.5 million.
On that visit, Diana made an interesting connection to another Chicago favourite, Michael Jordan. The same night Princess Diana was the guest of honor at the Field Museum of Natural History gala, Jordan was entering Game 1 of the NBA finals against the Seattle Supersonics.
Being on the same night of the finals, Jordan wasn’t able to attend the gala. Instead, he gave his invite to his mother, Deloris, to take his place. Deloris’ stay at the gala was brief though as she too wasn’t going to miss out on supporting her son. She didn’t leave without meeting Princess Diana and giving her autographed merchandise for her sons, Harry and Will.
Diana’s visit left a huge impact on the city and her presence continues in Chicago with the critically acclaimed experience - Princess Diana Exhibition: Accredited Access. The limited time "walk-thru documentary" is available at the Oakbrook Center until the end of February.
