One of Cher's famous exes hired a private detective to spy on her after she left him for another man, and that's only the beginning.

In the part one of Cher: The Memoir, Part One, released last month, the "Believe" icon detailed the wild scene that unfolded right after she broke up with Sonny Bono.

In excerpts obtained by People, Cher wrote:

"Ever since we’d first started living together, he’d been secretly convinced I’d leave him one day. something he didn’t properly tell me until years later."

The "I Got You Babe" standouts had a taping of The Sonny & Cher Show the night the songstress called it quits, an action Bono promised America would "hate" her for. Amid relationship turmoil with Bono in the early '70s, Cher became attracted to a guitarist named Bill, whom she fled with the night she and the former politician split.

Cher and Bill took to the airport in separate cars (to avoid public speculation) and once they arrived in San Francisco, were followed by men Bono hired to spy on them. The two checked into separate hotel rooms after loosing the detectives in the fog, and ended up sleeping together that night.

"A little later, we made love, and it was unbelievable. I knew then that I would never have sex with Sonny again," Cher recounts.

The detectives took Cher back to Los Angeles the next morning and the separated pair continued taping their show until 1974, months before their divorce in 1975. Despite their differences, Sonny and Cher ended up reconciling before Bono's death in 1998.
