Maryland Engineers Working to Turn Breast Pumps into Ventilators

A mother and engineer in Maryland has figured out a way to retrofit breast pumps to work as ventilators. Brandi Gerstner says she used an X-Acto knife and a screwdriver to reverse the suction function on a breast pump so it expels air. “Just as a mom, I spent a lot of time with those devices,” Gerstner says. The ventilators still need to be outfitted with emergency sensors to ensure consistent air flow. Gerstner also wants to make sure "that the units in their final form are going to be sanitizable." Here's a look at what she's done....
