Jumping Worms are Invading Illinois

The number of "jumping worms" in Illinois and the Chicago area has been growing in recent years according to the Chicago Tribune.

Jumping worms, also known as crazy worms, Alabama jumpers or snake worms are native to east Asia but have invaded the US and are a threat because they are energetic feeders.

The earthworms we're used to seeing originate from Europe, but these ones are not good when it comes to helping soil and gardens. They tend to stay in the top layer of soil and eat all of the organic matter that plants depend on making the soil low in nutrients.

Considering this AND the fact that they jump around, I don't want to see any in my back yard...chances are that will be a rare thing in the future though as they have been taking over the entire state.

Here's a video showing how they "jump."
